When does a guy go from being single to being a bachelor?
Does it have to do with how old he is?
Is he automatically a "confirmed" bachelor? Or is that only if he's even older? Or is it just '50s slang meaning homosexual?
Does being a bachelor mean the guy has to date a lot?
Does it mean he has money?
Is it better to be a bachelor than to be single?
Which suggest a better person?
The way I personally interpret it is that a 'bachelor' is so by choice, while someone who is considered 'single' would actually like to have a partner.

Yes, I would think a 'bachelor' would date, though maybe just occasionally and it would be clear that he had no interest in pursuing a relationship further. I think a single person would date, too, but with more hope for a relationship.
I don't think money has anything to do with it.
Yes, I think 'confirmed bachelor' has a homosexual connotation, if vague.
I think it depends on whether you are hoping to have a long term relationship sometime in the future. If not, then I guess it's better to be a 'bachelor,' but it is making a statement.
I don't think there's much of a moral highground either way. They are just different. Though, to me, 'bachelor' somewhat connotes womanizing. Which would be not good, just to be clear.
So... why?
I pretty much agree with Heels' interpretation that a "bachelor" is so by choice, while a guy who is "single" is probably just someone who couldn't get laid.
ReplyDeleteBut I think it has to with age and money (and social status), simply because most women find older men and financial stability to be a desirable quality. For example you'd say George Clooney and JFK Jr. is/was a bachelor, while the teenager who bags your grocery at the market is just plain ol' single.
I suppose it's "better" to be a bachelor than to be single, there seems to be more options for a bachelor on whether to remain single or enter couplehood with someone. I don't think either suggest a better person. All people can be crappy, whether you are a bachelor or just single.
So...why?

ReplyDeleteOne way or another, it's all good so long as the bachelor/single guy doesn't live with his mother if he's over 23 - maybe 25 if he's in school...
