Happy Birthday!

Today, we are the same number of years old. But we’ll never be the same age, will we.

I started thinking about you a couple of weeks ago. While I was on breaks at work, I started a list of horror and horror adjacent movies to watch in October and The Rocky Horror Picture Show was a must watch. That was your favorite movie in high school. You watched it three or four times a week after you got your own copy of the video. In fact, I’m watching the movie right now because it’s your birthday and I was going to watch it anyway.

Remember the first time we watched it together? We borrowed C-----‘s copy. You took it home and watched it the first afternoon. I got it the second afternoon. And on Saturday we watched it together. You dragged me off the sofa and (forcefully) encouraged me to do the Time Warp with you. It was nice having a person who was more obsessed with this movie than I was. Someone who was willing and able to talk about the sheer… wonderfulness of it.

Anyway, the last time I saw you was at your wedding in the summer of 2007. You’ve stopped by my parents’ house when you were in their neck of the woods during holidays, but you were never there when I was. And I didn’t know where your parents had moved to. I knew the subdivision, but not which of the hundreds of houses was theirs or even which street they were on. I couldn’t search you out. I couldn’t even call you or email you because you had changed your phone number a few times and your email address, too, but never told me. Hell, the only reason I knew about your wedding was because you finally accepted my Facebook friend request the week before it took place and when I congratulated you, you invited me.

Not that I want to be like this, right now.

You were my best friend. Did you know that? I’m sure I never told you, but did you know? I think I was yours for a short time, too. It didn’t last though. You found others in our group that I think you liked more. I’m grateful for you and the time we had together, but I do wonder what happened sometime.

Not specifically to us, but in general, what happened to you.

You were so close with some of us, that I never expected you to cut certain people out of you life, but you did. You were especially close with two people and then you, well, hated them. When they were willing to write me back, neither one would explain why the sudden shift between the three of you from being so close. Close enough that there were rumors. From what information I have gathered, I have inferred that maybe one or more of you wanted to be closer in a way that others were unwilling or unable to be close and that forced you all apart. For a time, early in your college career, you were so happy that most of your friends were gay and then you had a falling out with them, too.

Did they ask you questions or imply things about you that you weren’t comfortable with?

I guess what I’m wondering is, are you still a fan of The Rocky Horror Picture Show? When your children discovered the movie, were you cool about it? When one fell in love with it, did you encourage that love?

Your brother was at my brother’s “Fuck Cancer! I’m Still Alive!” party last week. He said that you had moved to Australia, but not where on that continent. It’s a big place and a lot of it is hot, dry, and dusty. I hope your not out there, but are somewhere near beautiful beaches and far away from the horrifying spiders, but you were never that lucky before.

I think of you around this time each year.

I hope you and your family are well.

I hope you are happy and joyful more often than any other emotions.

I miss what we were.

Happy birthday.

Gone to the Movies Now #2: The Handmaid

The Handmaid opens with one of the leads driving a car. She parks her car and puts on glasses.

This struck me as odd. I've know lots of people who are required, by law, to wear glasses while driving who take them off once the car's parked. (I don't understand this behavior. As one who wears glasses, I like to see as clearly while I'm walking around as I do while I'm driving, but that's just me.) However, I have never met anyone who can drive without glasses who decides to put them on before they get out of the car.

The beginning left me uneasy and that sense of unease didn't leave until about halfway through the movie. None of the leads are telling the full truth. The movie clearly wanted me to feel certain ways about the lead character, but they way that acted in or reacted to situations didn't seem quite right. I couldn't place my finger on it.

I felt the unease for a long time. Like long enough that I was questioning if I wanted to watch the rest of the movie. I wasn't going to leave because I paid my money, but still... did I want to be there?

Then there's an intimate moment when, rather than showing anything, the director moved the camara off the couple and onto an object, which was odd because there was some pretty serious sensuality with naked bodies not long before this scene. Why, I wondered, was that choice made?

And then the shit hit the fan and the movie became more focused and I started to enjoy myself.

I'm not going to say much about what happened, but I will say that I have rarely been so happy to see shoddy police work from a victim blamer.

Gone to the Movies Now #1

I've been holding on to movie tickets since late-ish 1995. Earlier this year, while sick, I entered the tickets into a spreadsheet. I'm sharing it here.

It's only a complete list of tickets I have, not all the movies I've seen in the theater. Also, I'm not always given a ticket when someone buys form me. A few were old style tickets that didn't list dates.

Anyway, here you go:

Lost in Location

It's very rare for me to see a TV show or movie that takes place somewhere that I've spent a large amount of time.

That said, I'm watching Sacramento and been really bothered by some of the geographic choices.

Like the guys driving from LA to Sacramento and for some reason there's a brief point when they're on a two lane road with no building in site. Unless you're pulling off because you're desperate to go to the bathroom, there's no reason to leave the highway on that drive.

Also, they cross the Tower Bridge twice and it seems that both times are coming from West Sacramento into Sacramento. Once, it even suggests that they got of I-5 on to the bridge. There ain't no exit from 5 to the bridge.

Then, they're at Joe's Crab Shack in Oldtown, when they throw the "ashes" into the river, and then go to breakfast. I assume they'd go somewhere close, which is all of downtown and midtown. (It's not that big compared to other cities with a downtown and midtown.) It's Sunday and the road is completely empty. I'm not just talking traffic, but no one is parked on the street. Let me tell you, any place with a decent breakfast in that area, on a Sunday, wouldn't have parking for blocks. It must have been a really shitty diner.

While it didn't ruin the movie for me, it did take me out of the story.

Is it like this all the time for people who live in New York or LA or, London, or Paris?

I'm sorry, if it is. I don't like this feeling.

A Little Annoyed

I watched The Fault in Our Stars this evening. I read the book, years ago, because emotionally I'm always a 15 year old girl, and remembered most of the details.

Anyway, spoilers for an 11 year old movie, there are two moments that bothered me:

  1. When Isaac introduces himself he says he has a glass eye. The shot is close enough to then show both eyes moving with the exact same dexterity. Uh, not. That's not how it works. Sorry.
  2. Near the end, while Gus is dying and in a wheelchair, for many scenes, he's still wearing his artificial leg. I mean, it's possible that he might continue to wear it, but it's unlikely that he'd wear it when he felt so tired and awful. It just bothered me.

Otherwise, the movie's fine. The acting is pretty good and the well deserved vitriol toward Van Houten works really well.

Stars granted.

Hot Take?

To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Numar is an important movie.
It's definitely not a great movie. I'm not even sure that it's a good movie. It's an important movie, though.

Back when it was first released, I was in high school. There was only one actual city in the county I grew up in and that city had less than 5,000 people. Hell, the whole county, all 2,000 some odd square miles of it, only had about 50,000 people. Yeah, I grew up rural and it's pretty darn redneck, with the little good and lotta bad that brings with it. But...

To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar played in the local movie theater.

I got to watch a story about three drag queens traveling across the USA and being loved by a small town in middle America.

I got to watch this movie with my friends surrounded by a surprisingly large number of hetero couples who seemed to be enjoying themselves.

If I remember correctly, the movie was even #1 at the box office for a week or two. The movie wasn't just watched by New Yorkers and San Franciscans, you know.

Sure, there were better movies along similar themes that came out around the same time. Jeffrey and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert come to mind right away. I still find Jeffrey delightful and Priscilla is wonderfully heartwarming/breaking. Unfortunately, both movies did not play at my movie theater. The nearest independent theater would have been over two hours away and, at the time, I didn't even know it existed. I knew these movies existed, but I couldn't see them. I did see To Wong Foo, though.

(Funny that, with only one exception I know of, the three movies I mention all starred cis, hetero men. But it was the '90s and, as the song says, you take the good, you take the bad.)

How many weird kids with the weird friends who were trying to figure themselves out got to watch this movie and, maybe, see a bit of themselves up on the screen?

Yeah, it may not be a good movie, but I think it's an important one.

Oh, and if you haven't seen any of these movies, but want to, please be aware that the language and some of the ideas are very much of their time. There's a good chance that parts will make you uncomfortable. 30 years of (some) positive growth will do that to a culture.

Old Movie

I'm sitting in a theater waiting for them to start playing South Pacific. You know, the musical by Hammerstein and Rogers.

The weirdest thing is their playing disembodied audience sounds. Mumble, mumble, mumble.

It's disconcerting.

Normally, by now, my phone would be off and I'd be reading the book that's in my lap. This theater is way too dark. It's at the level that most movie theaters use after the previews start; dark enough to see the film on the screen, but bright enough to easily see the aisles and seats.

I know. Have you ever had your eyes dialated at the optometrist? It's at that level. Very uncomfortable, for me. I'm here by myself and I'm not going to ask a stranger, so I don't know if others find it as uncomfortable as I do.

The mumbles are strange. Constant. Part of me wonders if this is what He'll could be like. Unseen people having conversations around you, but you can't make out any words. Just sounds with enough structure to let you know it is language, but nothing distinct enough to be language. Listening to conversations in a language you don't speak would be easier on the brain because you would be able to make out individual words and sentences.

That Next Marvel Movie

Dear Marvel Movies:

Re: Captain America: Civil War

Your movie has the same problem as the comic book event did.

You insist that both sides are equally right. That there is no right answer to whatever the question will be, but two are given and we, the audience, are supposed to decide which of our heroes are correct.

I'm here to tell you that once you put Captain America on a side, you have your right answer. We all have the right answer.

The movies, since Captain America: The First Avenger, have been building Captain America as the American ideal. Not because of his super-strength and mighty shield, but because he's brave and spunky and relentless and eager to do what's right even before he's shot up with an ex-Nazi's magic juice. He tried to enlist a half-dozen times. He jumped on the grenade when everyone else ran. His first thought was to rescue the kid who could swim. He happily served in an integrated Army. Time and again, in the movies he's been shown to be morally right. The moral choice for America.

If Captain America is the physical representation of America's morality, how can Iron Man also be right?

Also, if the movie ends like the comic did, please do this for the next Avengers movie:

Fuck the Winter Soldier. Falcon for America!

One Scene

The house that I live in now has a one car garage and I find myself thinking about the movie Sabrina. (The one with Hepburn and Bogey and Holden. I haven't seen the newer one.) There's one scene, near the beginning, that I keep thinking about. Over and over and over.

Inside My Brain

I found the 3rd season of 30 Rock for $10 and been watching it this weekend. So I've got to thinking:

A few years ago it was really popular for porn companies to make "parodies" of popular TV shows. If I remember correctly, 30 Rock is one of the shows they parodied; I think 30 Rock even made fun of the idea. I started thinking about the many combinations of characters they could go through and I bet that they had Liz and Jack get together. And that thought upset me.

One of my favorite things about 30 Rock is that Jack and Liz are friends with little to know sexual tension. They even refuse to kiss; they just can't imagine doing that together. And a porn that I haven't seen, but know exists bothers me because it, probably, gets a fictional relationship wrong.

Troy, the Movie

I really want to like Troy. I really do. I remember watching it in the theater oh so many years ago and just feeling a sense of disappointment.

The idea of doing the Illiad as it may have actually happened, not the gods infested, joyous insanity that Homer wrote, is a cool idea. But the movie doesn't work.

It implies that the Trojan war lasted merely weeks rather than ten years. The dialogue is so clunky that even some really good actors can't speak it well. (Although the guy who plays Odysseus handles it perfectly.) Achilles is the person we follow, but he's an arrogant, whiny asshole, not a hero. I hate how inconsistent the accents are; example: the king of Sparta has a Scottish accent, his brother has an English accent, and his wife has a French accent. Now I could get behind the idea that Spartans are the Scottish of the Greeks, but Helen ain't French.

Still, for the most part, the movie looks good and I find myself watching it every few years because maybe one day it'll be a great movie rather than a disappointment.

How They Should Have Made Oz The Great and Powerful

Act 1: The Wizard (he should never have a name) crashes into Oz. He begins to use his knowledge to help and dazzle people. He glues china people. He pulls coins from people's ears. He touches fire to a powder and unblocks a river. His legend grows and Oz has been without a leader for a long time. It's been years since Ozma was on the throne. And through a growing consensus, the Wizard gets put in charge.
Act 2: The witches of the North, South, East, and West come to meet this Wizard. They can see that his power is nothing like theirs, but some of the things he does is just a powerful. The Witch of the North leaves, not wanting anything to do with him. The Witch of the East chooses to consolidate her power in Munchkin land. The Witch of the West tries to steal the source of his power, but ends up hurt and she joins with her sister in the East to recover. Glinda, Witch of the South, chooses to join with the Wizard because she believes that Oz needs a leader.
Act 3: The armies of the East and West march on the Emerald City. The Wizard uses science and illusion, and a little bit of Glinda's magic, to defeat the armies. With the battle won and the witches retreating to their homes. The Wizard is declared The Wizard of Oz and the movie ends.
Hell, that could make one good movie or a pretty decent trilogy. Oh the lost opportunity.

Horror Movie #3

The last time I did a horror movie day I made the mistake of watching the bes of the four early on. I decided to not make that mistake today.

The Exorcist is a slow movie, but everything that happens builds and builds until it comes to the confrontation that the title promises.

It's been a long time since I've watched this movie and it still creeps me the hell out. I especially like how, in this extended director's cut, the movie really builds on the possibility that the girl is simply insane. There are so many doctors and so many tests done to her and there is no logical conclusion found, so they have to move toward faith.

Horror Movie #2

The problem with The Lady in Black is that it's boring. Not just slow, because a slow horror movie should really build suspense as it ramps up to the ed, but very dull.

It's the story of a sad man who lost his wife when she gave birth to their son four years ago. The sad man is sent to a small town to settle an estate. There he is sad and kids die and he sees a female figure wearing black and that's about it.

Oh, and the movie ends "happily" with the sad man and his son dying but they get to rejoin their wife/mother in the afterlife.

Horror Movie #1

I remember hearing that the original Evil Dead is the worst of the trilogy.

I don't know, I thought it was pretty good. Sure it doesn't have the slapstick of the second movie or the shear joyous insanity of the third, but it's supposed to be a straight forward horror flick, and it succeeds completely. The blood flows, the makeup is great, the special effects are fun, and there were a couple of times when I jumped even though I knew what was coming.

Sure, most of the acting is over the top and bad in the only way that newish actor can act, but that's part of the charm. Most horror movies now feel too slick and polished. I like how Evil Dead is gritty and grimy. The way it's shot feels more real, more intimate.

The only thing that kind of bothered me is that it's the women who get possessed first. Why is that?

Horror Movie Day

I really like the $5 DVD bins at stores because I almost always buy something when I'm there.

Today I'm going to watch the three horror movies that I bought recently:
The Evil Dead (the Sam Raimi one, not the new one)
The Woman in Black (starring Harry Potter)
and The Exorcist Extended Director's Cut

I'll be sharing brief thoughts after each movie.

Too Damned Long

When I first saw The Avengers a few weeks ago I walked out of the theater having enjoyed myself, but by the end I was tired and, horrible as it is to say, bored. The end is pretty much non-stop action, how could anyone get bored? My theory was that the final fight was too damned long. Today I put that to the test and I was right.

See, the movie's built up on exciting moments. They start out, relatively, small, after that opening sequence. The opening is a teaser, though, and announces right off what kind of movie this is. Then the film slows down. We meet our main heroes, minus the one were were already introduced to, in short vignettes so we understand who they are and what they want. From there the action slowly gets bigger, with nice breathers in between so the audience can relax and laugh which should help to clean the mental palette for the next action set piece. Joss Wheadon, who wrote and directed this movie, understands that the brain needs the break, that's why all his actiony/horrory TV shows used comedy to help break up the tension, if only for a second, to make room in the brain for more excitement. The action also get longer as the movie goes on, but it's short enough that it didn't wear me out.

Until that last fight.

**Here's where I get a little spoilery, in case you haven't seen the movie yet and still care.**

I had my watch with me and turned on the stopwatch to time the fight. I started when the first aliens came through the portal, that seemed a fair place. The specifics aren't really important because I was engaged. I was on the streets with Captain America, flying through the city with Ironman, and smashing armored fish/lizard things with the Hulk. And then, suddenly, I wasn't.

I looked down at my watch. Fifteen minutes had passed. Cap was just about to rush in to rescue people who had been cornered in a bank, or whatever, by aliens. Here's where this fight scene became agonizing. The punching, shooting, zapping, and punching became boring. Yeah, that Hulk scene with Loki made me laugh, but that was way past the point where I wanted something else.

I just thought of the end of Return of the Jedi, where it bounces between the three fights: one on Endor, one around the Death Star, and one in the Emperor's throne room. It's long, but all the fights have such different tones and tickle different parts of my brain that it doesn't get boring. It also cuts from the exciting World War II style space battle to the point on Endor where it look like the Rebels have lost and seem to be surrendering then cuts to Luke and Vadar fighting. Did you see the break my brain got there? During those few minutes on Endor! That sort of pacing kept my mind shifting gears kept my brain active and attentive.

The closest thing to a break during that last fight in The Avengers is when Fury is talking to those shadowy faces. The problem is that it comes to late. Just a few minutes after Fury's conversation that professor doctor guy who was in the Thor movie wakes up and that's where I hit stop on my watch because I correctly remembered that there was no other alien fighting after that. Twenty-six minutes and one second of fight. Ten minutes too much for my brain, apparently.

The movie's still a lot of fun, but the final fight is so relentless.

And I can't even say how I might fix it. My gut reaction is shorter, make it shorter because there are no good subplots to cut away to. At that point the helicarrier is safe and they'd already killed the best character to come out of these linked movies, so I don't want to go there. The best New Yorkers are for is short reaction shots to the horror around them and that's the only way they're useful to the movie.

Maybe the next one will leave me feeling energized in the end rather than bored. I'm rooting for you Mr. Wheadon. We all are.

Really, Only I Care

I've been watching too much YouTube and it led me to decide that when they make a Wicked movie, based on the play, not the book, Anne Hathaway should play Elphaba. She can act. She can sing. And she'll probably look really nice green.

Still not sure about Galinda/Glinda, though. The idea of Heather Morris as Glinda amuses me, but I don't think she has the voice for it. (Of course, whose voice could compare to Kristen Chenoweth? No one.)

At least I have the main character cast. (I even have a back-up actress in Jenna Leigh Green. She'd be good, too. Although I don't think she's "bankable" enough to be cast.)

It's the End of the Year as We Know It

In April, I made a list of movies I wanted to see this year.

As of 6:30 PM this evening I have seen twelve of the thirteen.

Kevin Smith was an asshole in how he release Red State so people like me didn't get to see it in the theater. And that's disappointing.

Here's to hoping next year will be just as "successful."

Eight Down, Five to go!

Out of this list, here are the movies I've seen:
  • Your Highness (Stoner movie set in a fantasy world. It kept me laughing)
  • Scream 4 (I thought it was great. If the series end here I'm cool. I hope they don't ruin it when they make the next.)
  • Thor (So much better than I expected. Is it science or magic? Who care?!)
  • Super 8 (Quite good, and so much more violent than E.T.)
  • Green Lantern (Committed the cardinal sin of superhero movies: it was boring. So many story telling mistakes!)
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II (Much better than Part I, but that fucking epilogue was there. Idiots.)
  • Captain America: The First Avenger (This was so much fun. I'm a little sad, though, that there can't be more set during WWII.)
  • Rise of the Planet of the Apes (Just watched this yesterday and it was most excellent.)
