I like to imagine that there used to be one house and then a child, probably a daughter, got married and was given a house... next door! What a wonderful gift!

As for dark, I don't know, they do face east/west, so I imagine they get okay light in the mornings and evenings. I've never been in them, though, so I can't know.

The lawns are too overgrown for me. I imagine it must be pretty dark inside. I need light! Lots of light.
